This is part 8 of 8 in the series "Typo."
«Typo: clockwise down the drain |

After that seminal moment when they both realized that he could do no more for her, and she would do no more for him, she began looking for what she thought she needed in the arms of others. As time went on, she became more and more desperately promiscuous, never reconciling within herself that it was her own body that withheld the one thing that she could not live without.

He was well aware of what was going on, and though he cared for her as well as he could, their marriage was one in name only. Eventually, she rarely slept at home. When she did come home, it was usually to ask something… most of the time for money. He would give her what he thought she needed, and in spite of her venomous protestations, never more. They never divorced. She could disgrace herself, he couldn’t prevent that, but he couldn’t disgrace her. To him, she was still the beautiful woman who had helped him far more than he could ever have repaid.  In the end, she contracted syphillus, and after some years of  decline, died at the age of 37.

Meanwhile, he’d started his own business, a custom setting company. His company specialized in completely custom jobs, where the page layouts, sizes, and fonts were completely under the control of the client. New typefaces could even be created if the client had enough money, so the end result was completely unique. The business did well enough to attract some high visibility clients. One of of those clients was a very gifted writer. As his wife was suffering her final indignities, the writer became his friend, then his close friend, and then his confidante. Some time after the death of his wife, he married his best friend, the writer, and with that, the largest typo of his life had finally, finally, been reset.
