Tag Cloud

With the addition of tagaroo to my plugin load, I’m now paying closer attention to tagging, and so it’s time to include a tag cloud on my site. What good is tagging without a cloud? Well, of course the real value of tagging is in search engine optimization, but that’s another story. Tag clouds are cool, and interactive ones are even cooler. So I’ve added WP Cumulus to my bulging bag of plugins (have you noticed my blog responding more slowly lately?).
WP Cumulus is a flash-based interactive tag cloud. It presents my tags on a 3D sphere that rotates as you move your mouse over it. It integrates beautifully, and I’ve included it on a page, rather than on the sidebar, because I despise it when people put flash on their site’s landing page. Call me old-fashioned, I suppose, but flash tends to be overused and doesn’t enhance the value of a site enough to offset the bother that it can be. William Vambenepepe discusses the problems with flash quite nicely in his post titled “A flash of anti-genius.” So the net of it is that I use flash sparingly, and never, well almost never, on a homepage.
So check out my new neato tag cloud. We’ll see where tagging goes for me, but for now, it’s turning out rather neatly.
